Feher Joseph (2017) Academic Press, Boston

Abstract: This chapter begins with pyruvate conversion into acetyl CoA and CO2 by the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase. It then describes the combination of acetyl CoA with oxaloacetate to form citric acid. It then follows all of the biochemical transformations that convert citric acid back to oxaloacetate and 2 CO2 molecules, producing NADH and FADH2 and GTP along the way. How NADH and FADH2 lead to the synthesis of ATP is considered in the discussion of the electron transport chain and ATP synthetase. The energetic of the electrochemical potential of hydrogen ions across the inner mitochondrial membrane is discussed.

Correction: FADH2 and Complex II

Ambiguity alert.png
FADH2 is shown as the substrate feeding electrons into Complex II (CII). This is wrong and requires correction - for details see Gnaiger (2024).
