Preliminary programme

Topic
Registration will take place on Saturday, October 20 from 21:00-23:30 pm at Skarven Bar downtown Tromsø, and on the Coastal Express on Sunday from 00:15-01:30 am. We will disembark on Wednesday, October 24 at 14:30 in Bergen.
Main topics
  • Mitochondrial pathways: understanding the basics
  • The protonmotive force and respiratory control: Coupling states and rates
  • The protonmotive force and respiratory control: the thermokinetic basis
  1. Molecular motion in a diffusion gradient: from Fick’s law, the gas law and the van’t Hoff equation, to Einstein’s diffusion equation
  2. We do not measure gradients: from concentration and potential gradients to concentration and potential differences
  3. Electrochemical protonmotive force and chemiosmotic pressure: proton pumps and counterions
  4. Why are mitochondria small? Implications of the mitochondrial volume fraction on -200 mV, non-linear respiratory control by the protonmotive force explained by protonmotive pressure.
  • Restrictions to intracellular diffusion of ATP and ADP in cardiomyocytes - impact on cardiac E-C coupling
  • Two populations of muscle mitochondria: heart and skeletal muscle
  • OXPHOS efficiency in skeletal and cardiac muscles
  • Mitochondrial function during ischemia/reperfusion injury
  • Actomyosin contraction and the dynamics of calcium changes in cardiomyocytes
  • OXPHOS protocols: understanding the patterns
The scientific sessions will typically consist of introductory lectures plus selected abstract presentations, followed by discussions in small groups in an open “meet the expert” format.
Meet the expert
  • Deacetylation acceleration of BAT thermogenesis (WG3)

How to get there

There are daily flights in each direction between Oslo and Tromsø, flown by SAS and Norwegian (Please note that there are only a few flights on a Saturday)
The same companies also offer some direct flights from Stockholm Arlanda, Copenhagen, and London Gatwick, but these are seasonal (so do check yourselves if these routes are operating and of interest).
Arctic Airlink also offer direct flights to Tromsø from Luleå and Oulu. The nearest train station is Narvik.
It is 3 1/2 hours’ drive from Tromsø, and it is connected to the Swedish, not the Norwegian, rail network (sj.se). There is a bus link from Narvik, but usually, the train does not meet the last bus to Tromsø.

Abstracts

Abstract submission: until August 15, 2018.
The abstract title has to be included on the registration form.
  • Categories: Early career investigators (ECI) and students are invited to submit abstracts in four alternative categories and apply with their submission for a MitoEAGLE Scholarship:
  1. See MitoEAGLE Working Groups
  2. Present your abstract as a definition of a term in the context of mitochondrial physiology that is missing in MitoPedia. - » MitoPedia
  • Format
Abstract format
Example: Doerrier 2017 Abstract MitoEAGLE Barcelona
» Notificiation of MitoEAGLE scholarships: 2018-08-30.

Support

MitoEAGLE Scholarship

  1. Eligibility: Participants from Inclusiveness Target Countries, Early career investigators, and participants from all COST countries and International Partner Countries can apply - MitoEAGLE network.
  2. Grants will be allocated to selected participants. Higher grants will be given to members of Inclusiveness Target Countries and to participants with specific presentations.
  3. Submitted abstracts provide the basis for allocation of MitoEAGLE reimbursement. - Proposed deadline: 2018-August-15.
  4. The COST MitoEAGLE grant is a financial support to cover part or full expenses of the local costs (accommodation, meals) and for selected students partly travel expenses.Registration fees cannot be reimbursed.
Three MitoEAGLE grant categories
  • Grant 1: covers part of accommodation expenses
  • Grant 2: covers accommodation expenses
  • Grant 3: covers accommodation expenses and partly travel expenses
» Notification of MitoEAGLE scholarships will be given until end of August.

MiPscholarships

  • In addition, the Mitochondrial Physiology Society supports the participation at MiPschool with scholarships for students and early career investigators.
