Standardization of mitochondrial data

Description of the project:

Mitochondrial research strongly relies on high quality data. A novel project aims to develop a concept for a minimum data set to describe and exchange mitochondrial data between research groups. The development is based on the MIABIS (Minimum Information About BIobank data Sharing) standard, which was created for sharing meta data referring to biobanks and biomaterial collections. Within the framework of this project, we evaluate, which basic data is needed to describe mitochondrial meta information and if MIABIS could be reused for this purpose. The project consists of five steps: During Step 1 relevant free-text mitochondrial information is analyzed following and extending the definition analysis approach described by Neururer et al.. In Step 2 a typological analysis is carried out in order to identify the relevant data fields. These data fields are mapped to the concepts offered by MIABIS during Step 3. This step shows, to which extent the MIABIS standard can be reused and extended for this project. The concept for a novel mitochondrial data model is developed and described in Step 4. A detailed and expert-based evaluation of this concept is the main objective of Step 5. The project combines different approaches from interdisciplinary fields of research (e.g. computer science, social sciences) and contributes to the current state of the art of mitochondrial knowledge management to enhance mitochondrial research networking.

With the development of a minimum data set to describe and exchange mitochondrial data, which currently does not exist in any form, the company contributes decisively to the further development of the state-of-the-art and sets new standards for the standardized networking as well as the exchange of research information in the area of mitochondrial research. In the future, this standard can be used to harmonize mitochondrial information and thus increase interoperability of information and data exchange as well as networking activities. With the development of the standard a great contribution is made to the structured representation of mitochondrial data, which in turn makes a broader and more efficient use of this data possible. By improving the comparability and the exchange of structured data, a positive effect on mitochondrial research can be achieved.

Knowledge transfer

The project described is intended to promote the know-how of the company on the development of data standards which can serve as the basis for the knowledge base of mitochondrial devices and platforms as well as the use of adequate qualitative research methods. The standard is particularly important for future research and development activities and the expansion of the knowledge management base of the MitoFit platform as well as the automated annotation of Bioblast, including MitoPedia. In addition, the know-how obtained during the development of a data standard supports the company in consolidating its leading role in mitochondrial research as well as promoting research in this area through the standardized networking of mitochondrial data.
