Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a metabolically inert perfluorinated fatty acid which activates UCP1 in brown-fat mitochondria. UCP1-dependent respiration can be stimulated with 600โ€‰ฮผM PFOA after inhibition of the phosphorylation system.
