AUTOOXIDATION reactions of highly reduced organic compounds are a source of reactive oxygen species that contribute to ischemia/reperfusion injury. Antioxidants such as reduced glutathione (GSH; g-glutamylcysteinylglycine) are added to organ preservation solutions to reduce oxidative stress.<sup>1,2</sup> GSH is unstable, however, in University of Wisconsin (UW) solution in the presence of oxygen.<sup>3</sup> To our knowledge, no reports are available on the stability of GSH in other organ preservation solutions, such as histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) or Celsior solution. The present study reports for the first time a quantitative comparison of autooxidation of GSH in a variety of established preservation solutions, demonstrating in particular the high stability of GSH in HTK solution.
