Talk:References in BEC https-format

From Bioblast

Discussion by BEC executive editors

Gnaiger Erich 2022-06-01:
In my BEC editorial, https://www.bioenergetics-communications.org/index.php/bec/article/view/gnaiger_2021_bioenerg_commun, I cited Marshall McLuhan Herbert, Fiore Quentin (1967) The Medium is the Massage:
Our "Age of Anxiety" is, in great part, the result of trying to do today's job with yesterday's tools —with yesterday's concepts.
Scientific journals apply yesterday's concepts in the various formats of references (various abbreviations of journals, various formats of volumes, issues, page numbers). We can do today's job much better.
BEC is a signatory of DORA - Do not use journal-based metrics, such as Journal Impact Factors, as a surrogate measure of the quality of individual research articles, to assess an individual scientist’s contributions, or in hiring, promotion, or funding decisions. BEC may lead the way to do today's job with today's tools.

Chinopoulos Christos 2022-06-01:
I agree on on the suggestion for an https-reference format for BEC, but I don't agree in removing journal name (ok to remove pages); this is because as a reader I always have in my mind a Table of Contents (ToC) regarding good or bad papers and I need to be able to identify them just by viewing bibliography and not by clicking.

Kowaltowski Alicia J 2022-06-01:
I think the idea is exactly not to have the journal name, as per DORA principles that where you publish is not the important part. It is certainly a new and provocative way to do a reference list, and I kind of like the idea... BEC is the medium to push these boundaries.

Garcia-Roves Pablo M 2022-06-01:
I agree with Alicia, if the idea for BEC is to follow DORA principles then Erich’s proposal for a new format for a reference list is adequate and I like it. There will be always some adjustments to new ways to proceed. This way you should open the link and you are closer to assess the work performed by the authors than just guessing about the quality by the journal where it has been published.
