Welcome by the local organizers

Dear participants:

Welcome to MiPschool, March 2015 in Cape Town, South Africa.

It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the Mitochondrial Physiology School in Cape Town, South Africa. The school will be held at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, located at the magnificent Cape Town waterfront. All participants will be resident at the venue.

The focus of the school is to combine state-of-the art lectures by international and local experts with hands-on analyses of aspects of mitochondrial function and morphology using different technologies. Several techniques of mitochondrial analyses will be presented to enable participants make informed choices for their own research needs. It is our desire that by the end of the three-day school, participants will have gained a better understanding of the advantages and limitations of the available techniques currently used to study mitochondrial function and the rapid advances that have been made in the field of mitochondrial physiology. Other important objectives of the school are: 1) to provide an opportunity for participants to present their research interests to participants for constructive comments using oral (PowerPoint) or poster formats and 2) to enlarge “mitochondrial networks”. The oral presentations shall last 7 min each (+3 min questions and answers) and formal poster presentations, 3+2 min.

Arrangements have been made for participants to tour interesting places in the Cape Town area including Table Mountain, Robin Island, wine routes and Cape Town Waterfront. The gala dinner, showcasing South Africa’s rich musical and dancing heritage, will crown the MiPschool experience. These events, which are intended to expose participants to the rich, diverse and very fascinating culture of Cape Town and its surrounds; including its peoples, foods, music and dances, are bound to be unforgettable. We warmly invite you to be part of this experience in March 2015.

A one-and-half day pre-MiPschool O2k-Workshop will take place from 23rd to 24th March 2015 at the Research Unit for Exercise Science & Sports Medicine, University of Cape Town, Newlands. A separate registration for this workshop is required.

For further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Deidre Raubenheimer or Edward Ojuka.

Welcome address by the Chair of the MiPsociety

This MiPschool, March 2015 - the Mitochondrial Physiology School taking place in Cape Town in March 2015 – is the 7th MiPschool organized by the Mitochondrial Physiology Society. Complementary to the International MiPconferences, the first two MiPschools 2007 and 2008 were organised in Schröcken, Austria, the birth place of the MiPsociety. Subsequently, MiPschools were held at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, USA (2009); Druskininkai, Lithuania (2010); University of Cambridge, UK (2012); and University of Copenhagen, Denmark (2013).

MiPschools are open to graduate students, postdocs, scientists from academia and biotechnology/pharmaceutical companies, and related entities. The aim is to provide information on current concepts and trends in mitochondrial physiology, ranging from basic to biomedical and clinical perspectives. Despite its strong base in Europe, MiPschools are now spreading to all continents in close cooperation with national and international organizations. To support these aims, I invite you, on behalf of the society, to join us at the MiPschool, March 2015 in Cape Town, South Africa and to become a member of MiPsociety.
