Salicylhydroxamic acid

Description

Salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM; synonym: 2-Hydroxybenzohydroxamic acid N,2-Dihydroxybenzamide) is an inhibitor of the alternative oxidase (AOX). When AOX is blocked by SHAM, electrons are forced through the CIII-cytochrome c oxidase pathway, allowing observation of the operation of the CIII-CIV pathway without AOX activity.

Abbreviation: SHAM

Application in HRR

SHAM: Salicylhydroxamic acid (99%; HOC6H4CONHOH); Sigma S 607, 5 g, store at RT; M = 153.14 g·mol-1.
SHAM is reported to be easily soluble in EtOH. So EtOH could be considered as a solvent, too. However, in Oroboros-lab SHAM in EtOH has not been tested yet.
Caution: Irritant!
Preparation of 250 mM stock solution (dissolved in DMSO):
  1. Weigh 76.57 mg of SHAM.
  2. Dissolve in 1950 µL of DMSO.
  3. Divide into 0.2 mL portions
  4. Store at -20 °C.
